Laminate is a good alternative to other floor coverings. It looks more interesting and solid than linoleum, lasts longer, but is much more economical than wood. Laminate is usually laid on the floor, but you can also put it on the stairs to give it a good look.

Before covering the stairs with laminate, you need to choose the material itself. Here it is important to consider not only the color shades, but also wear resistance. For public spaces, choose laminate classes 33 and 34. This is the most durable option, it is laid in places where people often and a lot.

In the home interior, you can use laminate class 32. Such a coating will last for decades even with active use. If the staircase is of low traffic and is used as an additional one, then class 31 is suitable. This is the cheapest laminate with low durability, but it is suitable for non-walk-through rooms. Keep in mind that class 31 has a smaller selection of shades and textures, it is used to decorate simple non-ceremonial structures.

Installing laminate flooring on stairs – preparation

Before laying the boards, the steps must be prepared. Check the horizontal and vertical alignment of all surfaces with a level. Do not skip this step: laminate is laid only on flat surfaces, otherwise it will deform over time, gaps will form between the boards, and the coating will not be durable. If there are gaps, depressions, cracks on the steps, then putty them with a suitable material, and then sand them.

Make a waterproofing layer. It will prevent microscopic changes in the geometry of the structure and deformation of the laminate. Once again, make sure that the surfaces are flat.

After leveling, proceed to laying. Before installing laminate flooring on stairs, an insulating underlay is placed on the steps. It is made from different materials, most often polystyrene foam or polyethylene foam and thin panels made of coniferous wood. Cork panels are good at reducing noise, but this material is not considered affordable.

After laying and securing the underlay, begin laying the laminate. As a rule, this does not require professional skills or specialized tools: laminate boards are equipped with fasteners. Thresholds made of plastic or metal are suitable for finishing the corner joints between steps. They make the coating more neat and prevent its destruction.

Stages of installing laminate flooring on steps

• Measure the length of the steps and cut the underlay and laminate according to these dimensions.
• Start laying the laminate from the top step.
• Treat the step with glue, fix the underlay for the laminate.
• Apply glue to the underlay and lay the laminate.
• Press the board to secure it firmly.
• Cover the step below in the same way.
• Apply glue to the vertical part of the step, mount the underlay, and fix the laminate to it using glue.
• After finishing all the steps, install thresholds on the joints of the laminate panels.

After finishing, do not walk on the steps for 24 hours so that the glue sets and the parts are securely fixed. Otherwise, shifts may occur that will disrupt the geometry of the coating, and this will lead to it quickly failing.
