Garage roof replacement – replacement of a pitched garage roof. This is a complex construction process that takes a lot of time. Especially if you have to change the rafter system. The complexity also lies in the type of roof. If it is a single-pitched structure, the repair will not take long, plus it will be inexpensive. The more slopes, the more problems and expenses.
Modern garages with a single-pitched roof are erected immediately taking into account the angle of the roof structure. The front wall is raised higher than the back. The gables are completely filled with wall building material. This facilitates the construction of the rafter system, the elements of which are boards 40-50 mm thick, 150-200 mm wide.
They are laid with their ends on two opposite walls: the front and back. It is necessary to carry out a strong fastening.
Everything can be solved differently. If the old garage roof has served for many years and has not caused any problems, then the number of elements and the distances between them are taken from its design.
The rafter system is ready, you can begin installing the roofing. The installation technology depends on the type of the selected covering. They try to lay the corrugated sheet in one sheet along the entire length of the building in order to reduce the number of joints.
If the latter cannot be avoided, the sheets are laid with an overlap with an offset of 15-20 cm. Metal tiles are also installed with an overlap. Both metal roofing materials are fastened to the garage roof sheathing with roofing screws with a hex head. If asbestos-cement slate is used, then the fasteners are roofing nails with a wide head and a washer.
Garage roof replacement – laying insulation
If the task is to insulate the garage roof during a major overhaul, then this must be thought out right away. They are covered with a vapor barrier membrane. It will protect the insulation from moisture. It will remove moist air vapors from the insulation layer, which come from the garage premises. The insulation will always be dry. Which will have a positive effect on the technical and operational characteristics.
Laying the insulation between the rafters of the roof. If the garage is equipped with an attic, then it is better to do the thermal insulation from the inside of this room. Polystyrene slabs or mineral wool are laid between the rafters, covered with a waterproofing film on top. This is done with the roofing material installed.
Insulation from above the rafter system:
- slats are nailed along the lower edges of the rafters;
- thermal insulation material is laid on them;
- a vapor barrier film is stretched along the rafters from above;
- sheathing is mounted;
- installation and fastening of the garage roofing.
