Concrete sidewalk repair
Concrete sidewalk repair – here we will tell you about the main aspects of the process. A few years after the creation of concrete coatings, their surface may begin to dust and crack. Whatever the reason for this, you will need to repair the concrete to prevent further destruction and restore the surface to its former strength.

Understanding this problem will help familiarization with the recommendations for concrete repair, which professional builders willingly share.
The reasons for cracking and increased dust formation can be different.
This can be:
- use of an unsuitable grade of concrete mortar;
- violation of the laying technology (insufficient compaction, lack of care, attempts to walk or drive on a mixture that has not yet hardened);
- influence of unfavorable factors (freezing and thawing, moisture, acids or alkalis, increased loads);
- mechanical damage to the coating;
- corrosion of reinforcement in the middle of the concrete;
- age of the concrete pour.

Concrete sidewalk repair – preparation for restoration
The first thing that experts recommend doing is to assess the scale of the damage. Carefully inspect the surface, remove small chipping parts and the loose layer. The task is to get to the strong healthy layer and remove foreign impurities: dirt, dust, coatings. If the cracks reach the reinforcement, you need to clean it from corrosion and treat it with anti-corrosion compounds.
It is recommended to slightly widen the cracks to remove the loose layer of concrete from the edges. Ideally, their shape is brought to the Latin letter V. This guarantees a higher-quality restoration of the surface. Next, the damaged area must be subjected to three more operations:
- degreasing;
- moistening;
- priming with liquid mixtures.
It is important to note that priming is only done in warm weather; in frost, this operation can be skipped.
How to repair a concrete sidewalk?
In most cases, concrete surfaces can be repaired using concrete mixtures. They are divided into two types:
- cast (for horizontal sections);
- thixotropic (they can be used without formwork).
When choosing the type and composition of the solution, you need to take into account the brand of concrete that you are going to restore, as well as the operating conditions of the coating. When repairing small areas of concrete coatings and structures, you can use ready-made mixtures. They include polymer fiber, moisture-resistant cement and fine-grained filler. Most ready-made compositions are of the shrinkage-free type.
If you have to repair a large area, you should use a reinforcing mesh. It will additionally strengthen the structure and prevent further destruction of the concrete coating.
The reinforcement is attached to dowels. In addition, for serious volumes of work (for example, restoration of a concrete pool, foundation, fence of a network of paths in the garden), it makes sense to order ready-made concrete mixtures. Regarding the composition of concrete for repair and calculation of its volume for restoration, you can consult with specialists.
Let’s start repairing the concrete path
It is not necessary to wait until the primer dries. First, seal the cracks, trying to fill them as thoroughly as possible. Then you need to take a small spatula and evenly distribute a small amount of solution over the entire surface of the prepared base.
The main layer is applied with a rectangular trowel, carefully pressing it to the surface. After 20-30 minutes, when the concrete begins to set, the surface is leveled with a float. At this stage, it is convenient to form volumetric details (corners, protrusions).
The restored surface must be covered with a damp thick cloth or film, and at negative temperatures – insulated with rags. This will provide favorable conditions for the setting and final hardening of concrete.
Compliance with repair recommendations will allow you to completely restore the properties of the sidewalk, platform, stairs or other concrete structures. And as a preventive measure, you can recommend the use of impregnations that increase water resistance and strength.
